Everything you take off before a mitt touches the paint is dirt that cannot scratch it. ZEST and FOAM both do that job and they go about it differently, so the choice comes down to the car in front of you and the kit you own.

Using them in sequence
If you are running both, finish the ZEST stage and rinse it off before the foam goes on. Each wants its own dwell and its own rinse, and neither wants to dry on the car. Keep them in separate bottles; they are not made to be mixed together.
How dirty the car is decides how much of this you need. A good foam blanket lifts a lot, but it is not a contact wash. It is what makes the contact wash safe.

Get the dilution right
Read the method as well as the ratio. What you mix in a lance bottle is not what lands on the paint: the lance pulls that mixture into the pressure washer's own water on the way through, and how much it pulls depends on your equipment.

Before spraying
- Cool panels, out of the sun. Anything that dries on the car is harder to get off than what you started with.
- Mix it at the ratio on the bottle, and rinse it off while it is still wet.
- Read the handling information and wear what the bottle asks for.
- If you cannot identify a finish, a wrap or a respray, find out what it wants before you spray anything at it.
