Prepare before applying

Take the loose grit off with a soft brush or a vacuum before anything touches the surface. Wiping it is how fine scratches get into a dashboard. Delicate finishes and specialist upholstery have their own care instructions, and a test patch somewhere out of sight costs you a minute.

Keep a towel for the interior and only the interior. Anything that has been near wax, glass cleaner or a wheel will bring it back in with it.

The TOUCH application method

1. Preparation: Remove loose debris with a soft brush or vacuum.
2. Apply: Mist the product onto a clean microfibre towel (avoid direct spraying on electronic screens).
3. Wipe: Work the surface gently until contamination is removed.
4. Buff: Turn the towel to a dry side and buff to a uniform finish.

Around electronics and controls

Mist the towel, never the screen. Go easy anywhere liquid can run into a switch, a seam or a vent, and follow the vehicle's own instructions for displays. Keep it off the wheel and the pedals as well: a satin finish is the last thing you want where you need grip.

A stain, a damaged finish or a specialist material is a different job with a different method. Work out what you are looking at before you press harder.

If the finish looks uneven

• Check the grit came off rather than moved.
• Turn to a clean dry side of the towel and buff again. Swap the towel once it is saturated.
• Work smaller areas, so the application and the buff stay even across the panel.
• If a test patch changes how a surface looks, stop there and check what the maker says.
